Morocco has qualified to the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Atlas Lions sealed their ticket to the continental showpiece after South Africa and Liberia tied 2-2 today.
Morocco is leading Group K, with six points after two wins against Liberia and South Africa.
Zimbabwe, which was initially drawn in Group K, was disqualified by FIFA from playing the qualifiers due to the Zimbabwean government’s interference in the affairs of the country’s football league.
The suspension of the southern African nation means Morocco is mathematically qualified for the next AFCON, with the 2 wins from Zimbabwe’s forfeit giving the Atlas Lions a total of 12 points.
While Morocco has underperformed at AFCON tournaments in the past nearly three decades, the coming continental tournament will come as the North African country looks to put the finishing touches on the glorious story it started at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After making history in Qatar and winning the admiration and respect of world football observers and fans, the Atlas Lions will be traveling to Cote d’Ivoire with an eye on finally clinching a major silverware, something that has eluded generations of talented Moroccan footballers since 1976.
Per head coach Walid Regragui, Morocco is determined to win the coming AFCON.
“I told my players that we cannot be kings of the world before being kings of our continent,” Regragui said in a post-match press conference at the World Cup match, where Morocco dazzled football observers and made history by becoming of he first African and Arab country to reach the semi-finals of international football’s most prestigious tournament.
Morocco is currently the 11th best team in the world, according to the latest FIFA rankings. It is also the best team on the African continent, ahead of Senegal and Tunisia.
