Rabat – A teenage girl from the city of Agadir reportedly tried to commit suicide on Monday following a visit to the gynecologist with her mother. The mother had forced her to go to the doctor to check her virginity.
According to daily newspaper Al Akhbar, when the mother was paying the medical consultation, the girl ran away to get to the highest floor of a building in the center of Inezgane (12 km from Agadir). She then tried to end her life by throwing herself from the top of the building.
Fortunately, the girl survived the ordeal. She was taken to a nearby hospital to get medical care and then left the next day.
The same source went on to add that the girl felt humiliated to go through the process of checking her virginity. The teenager was also upset because she was not trusted by her mother.
Many families in Morocco link virginity to the idea of purity. Women should remain virgins until it is time for them to get married. In Moroccan culture, only women are subject to pressures from their surroundings to stay virgin before marriage, while men’s sexual adventures in the past are of no importance.
