Rabat – According to the Moroccan High Commission For Planning (HCP), expenditure among families increases by 16.3 percent during Ramadan compared to the rest of the year, with an even greater increase in purchases of food products at 37 percent.
Juices and beverage purchases increased by approximately 225 percent during Ramadan. Expenditure increases vary for food products: fruits raise by approximately 160 percent, spices by 60 percent, fish by 47 percent, oil and greasy foods by 5 percent, and tea, coffee, and aromatic plants by 2 percent.
On the other hand, non-edible products, including transportation and communication, increase by 21 percent, while the clothing decreases by approximately 14 percent. Activities and institutions increase by 4 percent, healthcare by 3 percent, equipment by 2.5 percent, and energy and habitat by 4 percent.
The changes in consumer behavior result in a price fluctuation. According to HCP estimates, the price of food products will increase by 0.6 percent globally this year’s Ramadan.
The estimate of increases in food products varies: fresh fish will increase by 6 percent, eggs by 3 percent, and poultry and rabbits by 2.2 percent. These percentages are higher than those of July 2016, just after Ramadan, where fish prices decrease by approximately 1.1 percent, poultry and rabbits by 0.5 percent, and eggs by 0.6 percent.
