The United Nations General Assembly confirmed today the reappointment of Ban Ki-moon as United Nations Secretary-General for a second consecutive five-year term. In a plenary meeting held at the United Nations General Assembly hall Tuesday afternoon, the General Assembly approved by acclamation Mr. Ban’s appointment after the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution no. 1987, in which the 15 members of the UN body recommended unanimously to renew the mandate of Mr. Ban, in accordance with United Nations Charter which states that the Secretary-General should be appointed by the General Assembly upon recommendation by the Security Council.
The Chair of the Group of Asian States at the United Nations in New York had written to the President of the General Assembly conveying the group’s endorsement of the candidature of the South Korean national for another term as UN chief.
Mr. Ban KI-moon is the eighth person to serve as UN Secretary-General. He has been in office since January 2007. His second term will run from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2016.
