The Arab League held an emergency meeting on Sunday and issued a statement to condemn the latest Israeli aggression on Gaza while Hamas calls for practical steps to stop Israel’s hostility .
“We issued a statement condemning the Israeli offensive on Gaza and Egyptian land,” Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Arabi told reporters in Cairo.
While recalling Israel’s full responsibility for the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip, the statement stresses the decision of the Arab League to support the Palestinian request to the United Nations to recognize the State of Palestine on the borders of June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Arab league also urged the international community to compel Israel to lift the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip and open crossings to and from this besieged territory.
The statement also said that Gaza strip is transformed into a big prison, with Israel always closing the crossings.
“Israel must allow the construction of the port, the rebuilding of the airport, the establishment of a safe passage between Gaza and the West Bank, and stop its refusal to enter the building materials to rebuild what was destroyed by the recent Israeli war on the Gaza Strip”, said the statement.
It also condemned the brutal Israeli aggression on the Egyptian forces that led to the downfall of a number of martyrs and wounded others.
While stressing that that Israel carries full responsibility for this heinous crime, the Council expressed its solidarity with the Arab Republic of Egypt, and his support of the Egyptian efforts in the face of this brutal aggression and its repercussions.
In connection with the recognition of the Palestinian State, the Monitoring Committee of the Arab Peace Initiative will hold tomorrow August 23 in Doha, a meeting at the level of foreign ministers. This is the third such meeting in two months, which is considerably more frequent than normal and is indicative of the urgency that Arab states are assigning to the issue of recognition of Palestine.
Chaired by Qatar, the meeting will be held with the participation of the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas and Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil al Arabi, says the same source.
