Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, commended the success and the “excellent arrangements” of the legislative elections process held in Morocco on November 25.
Moroccans cast their votes on Friday in the first legislative poll after the adoption of the new Constitution last July, which further reinforces the powers of the Parliament and the Prime Minister.
The Secretary General said, in a statement, the election “constitutes an important landmark in support of the democratic reform launched by the Moroccan Monarch King Mohamed VI.”
He added that the poll will reinforce “principles of good governance, political openness, social justice and economic development in the country.”
This is in line with the Ten-Year programme of Action adopted by OIC Member States during the Extraordinary Islamic Summit held in December 2005, concluded the statement.
With 107 seats in the 395-seat House of Representatives, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) won a landslide victory in Friday’s election. The voter turnout amounted to 45.5%, compared to the 37% registered in the 2007 parliamentary poll.
