Rabat, December 11, 2011
The National Council of the Independence Party (PI) unanimously approved, on Sunday, the decision to participate in the incoming government, to be formed by Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party, Abdelilah Benkirane.
The decision was taking during an extraordinary meeting in Rabat of the PI’s National Council dedicated to examine the Executive Committee’s agreement to take part in the Benkirane-led government.
The conference was headed by the IP secretary general Mr. Abbas El Fassi and attended by the members of the IP executive committee and the members of the national council. The party summoned the members of its national council across the country in order to grant legitimacy to any decision made about the PJD’s offer.
Before the official decision was taken by the party’s national council, analysts ruled out the likelihood of seeing the IP goes to the opposition, given the ideological affinities between the later and the PJD.
To form a new coalition government, the newly appointed head of government needed to secure a majority of 198 seats in the parliament. With the decision of the PPS, the MP and the IP to participate in the upcoming government, Abdelilah Benkirane, will have a conformable majority with 217 seats.
The IP, the MP and the PP obtained respectively 60, 32 and 18 seats in the month’s legislative elections, while the PJD secured 107 seats.
