Moroccan Minister Delegate to Foreign Minister Youssef Amrani on Tuesday held talks with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Jeffrey D. Feltman, on the means to achieve a “consensus” within the U.N. Security Council on the issue of Syria.
“We discussed how to achieve a consensus within the Security Council” on the draft resolution submitted by Morocco, Feltman told MAP news agency.
Morocco has submitted a draft resolution calling on “Member States to support the Arab roadmap for Syria and the United States strongly supports this initiative,” said the U.S. official.
The two sides held talks on the sidelines of a meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Syria.
The draft resolution submitted jointly with the Member States of the 15-nation Security Council and supported by several Arab countries made sure to integrate all the steps taken by the Arab League as part of its new initiative on Syria.
The United States shares with Morocco a “historic partnership and friendship,” said the U.S. official, noting that the partnership is expected to grow more as Morocco has a seat in the Security Council.
“We will work very closely” in the coming years, he said.
For his part, Amrani welcomed the “ongoing dialogue” and “strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States” that have “enabled the two countries to advance resolutely towards a relationship more ambitious and promising.”
