Bombers targeted staff at Israel’s embassies in India and Georgia on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said, with a bomb going off in New Delhi but a second device in Tbilisi defused.
According to the Indian channel IBN Live, a car belonging to the Israeli embassy in New Delhi caught fire after an explosion near the mission.
The embassy spokesperson said two injuries were reported one of which was a female diplomat.
The IBN Live channel reported her to be the wife of Israeli defense attaché.
Investigators are searching for two young men on a motorcycle seen moments before the car caught fire. Eye witnesses told IBN Live that the men threw something at the car which caused a minor explosion. It is yet unclear whether the fire was the result of the explosion or caused it.
The Israeli embassy is located in a high security area in the Indian capital which also houses Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The attacks took place a day after the fourth death anniversary of slain Hezbollah deputy leader Imad Mughniyah.
According to Haaretz newspaper, last year, Israeli embassies throughout the world received several suspected threats which coincided with the third anniversary of Mughniyah’s death.
The threat was believed to be directed at embassies in Africa, Southeast Asia and Caucasus.
Mughniyah was killed in a car explosion in 2008 and Hezbollah blames Israel for his assassination.
