Arab Foreign Affairs ministers reiterated their support for the Arab initiative submitted by Morocco to the UNSC, and insisted on stopping violence in Syria and helping the Syrian people and the disaster-stricken regions, Moroccan Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani said.
El Otmani told Arab-speaking daily “Akhbar Al Yaoum Al Maghribia”, on Tuesday, that the ministers decided during their meeting to put an end to the mission of Arab observers in Syria, especially after the resignation of their leader since it has become impossible for them to continue their work, calling for dispatching humanitarian aids and a mission of the UN peacekeeping force to monitor the ceasefire.
The said resolution, he went on, provides for tightening diplomatic and economic sanctions against the Syrian regime and stopping collaboration with Syrian diplomatic missions in international events.
He added that the implementation of these provisions depends on the outcome of the meeting of the “friends of Syria” slated February 24 in Tunisia, which is expected to agree on sending Arab-UN peacekeeping forces, maintaining the ceasefire and submitting the resolution draft to the UN.
He said that the Syrian national council might be called upon to speak during the “friends of Syria’s” meeting, emphasizing that all nations oppose a military intervention.
He said that no decision was taken on closing Syrian embassies in Arab countries, noting that severing all forms of diplomatic cooperation with representatives of the Syrian regime will put pressure on the Syrian diplomacy.
