The Libertad de Expresión International(LEI), an NGO that works for the protection of journalists across the globe, will hold its first conference under the theme “Protecting journalists in times of revolution”. The conference will take place on March 9th, starting at 9:30 in the morning at the “Acts Lounge” in the Rabat Cervantes Institute. The event will include professional journalists from the Arab World (Morocco, Syria), Europe (Madrid, Lisbon, Warsaw) and Latin America (Venezuela, Colombia).
Libertad de Expresión International (LEI) is composed of journalists who are committed to defending freedom of expression as enshrined in the universal declaration of Human rights. LEI’s journalists implement their work through investigations, sensitization campaigns, public information programs and direct talks with governments. Although based in Rabat, LEI has branches in other cities such as Madrid, Lisbon, Caracas, Washington, New York, Warsaw, Amman and Luanda.
Among the aims of the conference is to raise awareness about abuses and atrocities inflicted on journalists during the recent revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria. Participants from Portuguese speaking countries, Russia and Eastern Europe will also share their experiences of working under difficult circumstances and the challenges they face under the global economic crisis. Other issues to be discussed include persecution of journalists in Spain, Venezuela, and Colombia, impediments to freedom of expression in Venezuela, Human rights abuses under the reign of Hugo Chavez and victims of conflict and economic crisis.
In a separate session, participants will discuss the impact of the Arab Spring on Journalism. Mr. Youness Moujahid, member of the international federation of journalists and president of the national union of journalism in Morocco, will address the issue of “journalists in conflict areas”. Mohammed Zaid Mitwi, a Syrian journalist living in exile in Jordan, will speak on “the situation of media in Syria”. Portuguese journalist, Raul Praga Peres, will talk about “the impact of the Arab spring on Portuguese speaking media: Angola a case in point”.
