One would loses nothing if s/he let their all-the-time shrinking face muscles and always-frowning forehead and their glowering gazes loosen and produce a very effective medicine called a smile. Some people forget that “a smile is a curve that sets everything straight” as Phyllis Diller pointed out. Some people think that if they smile, they have to pay taxes on it and forget that smiling is the most inexpensive way to change their looks. They forget that smiling is like the light from the window of our faces, and it sends the warm message to others that they are welcome. How strange life has become! Whomever you talk to, you find her/him scowling: rich people, poor people, teachers, nurses, doctors, etc.
Smiles have departed from people’s countenance. More than that, even places have been contaminated by gloominess that people are sinking into. Whenever I happen to be walking around, I notice those frowning people whose face wrinkles says they lost the power of smiling ages ago. Those brightening smiles are rarely found nowadays, wherever you go: train stations, markets, houses, hospitals, etc., smiles have vanished from our lives.
People have become like those yellow fixed statues that don’t respond to people. Sometimes they make a great effort to act in a way they are not ashamed of, but they don’t think to produce a smile, the effectiveness of which is beyond what people think. They don’t know that “all the statistics in the world can’t measure the warmth of a smile,” as Chris Hart once said.
Frustration is dangerous, depression is a curse, and sadness is devastating! So why should we spend so much time in what will surely lead to our psychological and physiological destruction. Even if we are sinking into the thick blackness of a gloomy life, our smile should never leave our faces. The gloomier life becomes, the wider our smile should become.
A smile is like the morning coffee, without it our breakfast loses its sweetness.
It is like the autumn sun that warms our bodies after freezing.
It is like the breeze that heralds the coming of spring.
It is like the sign that guides people who lost their way in the desert.
It is like a one size shirt that fits all.
It is like the spices that makes our lives tasty.
A smile can cause boundaries to melt, hearts to warm up, and distances to reduce. When we smile, we share happiness with ourselves first, before we do that to others.
So let’s not be stingy to ourselves and to others too.
Let us forget about our pain, leave behind our personal problems, tolerate our enemies, and overlook our conflicts.
Let us try to get back our smiles, which have been disappearing because of our misunderstanding of the world.
Let’s smile; and we may revive our lives too before others’.
Let’s just remember that the more we smile at people, the more life smiles at us.
The more we love people, the more they love us back.
