Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN, ambassador Mohamed Loulichki, expressed, on Saturday in New York, the satisfaction of the Kingdom, as an Arab member within the UN Security Council, at the unanimous adoption of a resolution authorizing the deployment of observers in Syria.
The Council voted unanimously to send 30 military observers to the country to monitor the ceasefire. The observers are expected to leave for Syria in the next few days.
“The resolution is clear and calls on the government as well as on the opposition to comply with the first three points of the plan” of the joint Special Envoy of the UN/Arab League, Kofi Annan.
The three points provide for ceasing troop movements towards population centers and beginning pullback of military concentrations in and around population centers.
For Loulichki, who was speaking to reporters after the vote, this resolution is a “clear political message sent by the Security Council to the government and the opposition to effectively and immediately implement their respective commitments on these three points.”
He hoped that this resolution will contribute to ending violence and laying the groundwork for political dialogue, towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people for a stable democratic state.
