The UN Security Council resolution on Syria, adopted unanimously on Saturday, reflects the Council’s unity and its unreserved support for the good offices of the joint UN/Arab League special envoy, Kofi Annan, towards a political, peaceful way out of the crisis in this country, Morocco’s ambassador to the UN said.
The first mission of observers will be composed of a 30-strong military group to monitor the ceasefire. It is expected to leave for Syria in the next few days.
This resolution “effectively illustrates the Council’s unity and determination to end the violence in Syria and provides strong support for the good offices of the joint UN/Arab League special envoy, Kofi Annan, in accordance with the General Assembly resolution, the presidential statements of the UN Security Council and the Arab League’s resolutions,” Mohamed Loulichki told the Council after the vote on resolution 2042.
Morocco has, since it became member of the UN Security Council as representative of the Arab world, worked closely with the other members, towards unanimity to influence over the course of events in Syria,” Loulichki said.
Similarly, the Kingdom has always “welcomed and encouraged the positive contribution of countries with influence on the parties,” the ambassador said.
The Arab League has, from the outset, adopted courageous and pioneering decisions and initiatives to halt bloodshed and promote dialogue, and expressed, at its last summit in Baghdad, its strong support for Annan’s mission, for the rapid and full cessation of hostilities in Syria, he said.
The diplomat hoped that the effective, rapid deployment of the first team of observers in Syria “to monitor the cessation of all violence will have a deterrent effect pending the deployment of the UN mission.”
Loulichki reiterated Morocco’s strong attachment to the unity and territorial integrity of Syria.
