“Morocco can only reiterate its appeal to its key partners, especially the EU and the Council of Europe to continue to provide support and expertise in order to back this reform momentum” on which it has embarked,” Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani told, on Tuesday in Strasbourg, the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
The reform process initiated by the Kingdom, marked particularly by the adoption of a new constitution and the emergence of a new political elite thanks to the parliamentary elections held in November, reinforces its position as a “credible, respected partner within the community of nations at bilateral, regional and international levels,” El Otmani said.
This political process, carried out through “a participatory, democratic and inclusive approach, was not triggered by the uprisings under way in the region, yet they boosted it,” the minister said.
El Otmani commended “the efforts” made by the Moroccan parliament to promote its cooperation with PACE, with which it is the first to enjoy the status of “Partner for democracy” since June 2011.
He voiced conviction that such relationship will improve cooperation and consultations between Moroccan MPs and their EU counterparts on issues of common interest to meet the challenges facing states in the region towards fulfilling the aspirations of their peoples for greater progress and development, security and stability.
El Otmani insisted that this quality of partnership between Morocco and the Council of Europe is “a lever to raise it to the status of a privileged partner within the Euro-Mediterranean region, able to share its democratic experience and play a stabilizing role towards setting up a common area of peace and stability.
