Head of the government Abdelilah Benkirane called, on Tuesday in Meknès, at the opening of the fifth National Conference on agriculture, for supporting small farmers.
Such support should be ongoing and not limited to periods of drought to enable small farmers follow the sector’s development, Benkirane added, underlining that all parties concerned should strive doubly hard to reduce Morocco’s dependency and make it a producing country.
He commended the positive results of Morocco’s dam policy which helped weathering the impact of drought.
Agriculture Minister Aziz Akhannouch said, during the opening session, that cereal harvest is expected to reach about 48 million quintals during the 2012 crop year.
This fifth edition is themed “Agriculture at the center of rural development”.
