A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck western Algeria’s Chlef region on Wednesday, but did not cause any injuries or infrastructure damage, the Centre of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics Research said.
Tremors were felt up to 200 kilometres (120 miles) away in the capital Algiers, as well as in the neighbouring region of Ain Defla.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 0318 GMT, was eight kilometers to the east of the town of Beni Haoua.
Five thousand people perished in a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Chlef on October 10, 1980.
