Whether in Internet shops or in houses, adult movies and images have become more and more consumed both by young and old people. Every time you step into an Internet shop anywhere in Morocco, you can find adolescents huddled around computers trying to look for adult images and videos with no protection.
Ever since the Internet appeared in Morocco, there had been a growing adult movies audience in spite of their young age and also despite moral and religious values. Indeed, most of the adult movies consumers are around the ages of 14 and 17 if not more than 20. This phenomenon is not new in Morocco, but it has grown drastically during the recent years due to widespread technology and access to the Internet.
In the past, watching an adult movie was very much difficult and videotapes circulated secretly among youngsters and only a few could get their hands on the tapes. Nowadays, practically everyone can get easy access to adult movies on the Internet and even on cell phones. At home, working parents rarely monitor their children’s use of the Internet, which gives them the opportunity to watch adult movies either intentionally or accidentally.
So many social ills result from watching this type of movies. Indeed, adult movie consumption creates multiple forms of violence in society such as sexual harassment, rape, paedophilia and incest. Moreover, adult movie viewers can sometimes suffer from different psychological and social problems: they are isolated from the outside world and usually they don’t seek help from others, out of shame or for religious reasons.
Only a few people and parents are aware of the dangerous outcomes of the Internet. One can never imagine whom your child, daughter, brother or sister is talking with online or as the Internet allows them to get in touch with anyone anywhere in the world, be it good or evil. To prevent that, so many American child protection associations created programs and software disabling adult websites and chat rooms. As a result, children will be protected even when their parents are not around.
The reasons many youth are drawn to adult websites are too many, but most of the time it is because young people today feel more and more alienated and unable to get married due to social and economic difficulties. Therefore, they resort to creating virtual partners online and quench their thirst.
Paradoxically, the same country that produces so many adult movies online is the same one creating and working on protecting their children from watching these movies. So why not create a campaign in Morocco in order to make people aware of the dangers of the Internet by distributing parental control programs which are free online?
Personally, I installed K9 Web Protection, which is a parental control software available for free online. I use this program at home, so my siblings and friends can surf online safer than before. In addition to using Internet filters, people especially educators should speak to parents and Internet shops operators to work on decreasing this form of consumption if they want to protect our children and thus preserve a safe and healthy society.
