According to groups’ rights and lawyers, Intisar Sharif Abdalla, a Sudanese woman, has been sentenced to stoning for adultery. She is believed to be held near Khartoum and shackled in prison with her baby son.
Amongst fears that this sentence is an indication that Sudan could begin to implement Islamic Sharia after the secession of southern Sudan, activists and campaigners condemned the ruling, stating this is a violation of all international standards and laws.
Reporting on her psychological state now and attributing that to one of Intisar’s lawyers, Reuters confirmed that Intisar appeared to be “under severe psychological strain” and ” in dire need of a psychiatrist”
It is to note that the Criminal Court of Ombada, Khartoum, sentenced Intisar to death by stoning on 13 May on charge of adultery, under article 146 of Sudan’s criminal code of 1991. Initially, Intisar pleaded not guilty, but admitted to the charges later on after she was reported to have beaten by her brother. The conviction came after this sole testimony.
It is also reported that Intisar was denied access to neither a lawyer nor an interpreter during the trial, despite the fact she is not a native speaker of Arabic
