Monarchy in Morocco has a “historical legitimacy” and is a “source of stability,” regional director for North Africa and the Middle East at the German Foundation Friedrich Naumann, Ronald Meinardus, said.
All the European leaders see the monarchy in Morocco as a “source of stability,” Meinardus told MAP on the occasion of a seminar on the role of the European Union in promoting democracy in the MENA region.
Meinardus added that the European countries are confident that it is because “Monarchy enjoys historical legitimacy and constitutes a source of stability” that Morocco did not experience a revolution and violent protests in the context of the “Arab Spring”.
He also said that unlike many Arab countries, “Morocco has the advantage of living under a modernist, progressive monarchy,” as reflected by the institutional reforms undertaken in recent years and which, in the opinion of the all European leaders, have yielded clear results.
