According to the global ratings issued Tuesday June 12 by the Institute of Economics and American Peace (IEP), Morocco ranks as the 54th most peaceful and secure country in the world.
Morocco improved by two spots compared to last year when it ranked 56 out of 153 countries.
In 2011, however, Morocco earned itself a quite non-enviable reputation as far as the number of murders and deaths during fighting and peacekeeping operations is concerned. Also, in terms of respect for human rights and relations with neighboring countries, Morocco still has a long way to go.
Classified as the least peaceful areas in the world, some countries from North Africa and the Middle East have recently proved notorious for crimes perpetuated against humanity during the Arab Spring. The dramatic decline of peace in the Arab world has forced Arab countries to considerably lag behind other developing countries.
Since last year, Syria has broken the record for claiming the lives of thousands of innocent Syrians, which has led the country to rank among the worst countries on the list.
According to the same index, the noticeable improvement of the world peace is mainly due to the campaigns launched since 2011 against terrorist attacks, a key indicator of violence.
The Institute of Economics and American Peace has always stressed among its priorities the need to bring about more peace to the world and to shift the focus of the world from materialistic gains to the values of humanity. Equally importantly, EIP aims to conduct more in-depth research into human progress, particularly in the area of international peace.
