British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Sunday congratulated Mohamed Morsi on his victory in Egypt’s election, and called on the new leader to respect the rights of its citizens.
“The people of Egypt have elected a new President,” wrote Hague on microblogging site Twitter. “I congratulate him and them on the result, and the peaceful process.”
The minister urged Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood party, to show “early leadership on democratic and economic reforms and rights of all Egyptian men and women”.
Becoming Egypt’s first post-uprising president, Morsi won 51.73 percent of the vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who was toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak’s last premier.
