Anwaar Association has gathered 20 outstanding students from different academic institutions of higher education in Morocco around an educational summer camp program at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane. The program takes place from June 24 to July 1, 2012.
“We believe that youth can have an active role in the process of our country’s development,” said Charafa Guennouni, Program Director at Anwaar Association. “Our role is to give them a chance to be active citizens well versed in fields of knowledge other than their own.”
Every year, Anwaar Association selects a group of college freshmen based on academic excellence and leadership potential to join a special program where a variety of subjects are taught in a 45-hour module. The objective is to reinforce the students’ skills in and knowledge of language, project management, history, comparative religions, finance, and interpersonal communication.
This year, Al Akhawayn University contributes by offering the students a course in general Moroccan history, in English. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to understanding different aspects of the political, social, urban, and economic layers of Moroccan history and society, the course revolves around different disciplines such as archeology, geography, and anthropology as a way of understanding some of the main features of Moroccan history. Drawing on readings, lectures, and films, the objective of the course is to help students get a glimpse of Moroccan history from various perspectives.
“This is also an opportunity for us to visit such a prestigious university and meet its faculty,” said Hanane Mechal, a first-year student in the School of Medicine and Chemistry in Casablanca “This program allows us to dig more into the history of our country and analyze it from new angles. Learning about our past will help us prepare for a better future.”
