The 50th anniversary celebrations of the Algerian revolution have made two victims so far: the honor of Algeria and that of the daily prestigious Le Monde.
While Algeria demands France to repent for its “crimes against the Algerian people” during the colonization, the Algerian authority has made for itself a special publicity, published on Monday on the columns of Le Monde.
In Algiers, everybody is aware of the maneuver. Abdelaziz Boutflika’s power, unable to raise the popular interest on the main events of the recent years, resorted to the policy of a “banana republic” said a former Algerian ambassador to Paris. “None is fooled neither in Algeria nor in France.” It’s a coup that turned against us. President Bouteflika said in an interview with an agency of communication, the same idea was said by the Algerian diplomat who was a minister in the 1990s. Le Monde says that it is a general outcry that prompted the publication of the issue.
“But what Le Monde is going to do today with some thousand Euros,” asks a former head of the newspaper. “It is true that such event, which falls within the common memory of Algerians and French, should not be treated in a manner as checkbook. “This undermines Le Monde and shows the lightness of the Algerian leaders ,” said a specialist judge on Franco-Algerian relations. It is certain that this false step will be of negative consequences on both countries.
