Al Arabiya News Channel launched its third episode of ‘Nawafeth’ (Arabic for ‘Windows’) series on Sunday which features fine artists from the Arab World. The series is to release 100 episodes that will showcase profiles of the artists working in different art forms.
Zakaria Ramhani was born in the Moroccan city of Tangiers in 1983 into a family of artists where his father was well known for tackling classical issues about his country.
He graduated from the department of Plastic Arts at the Regional Pedagogical Center of Tangiers. In 2006, he became the youngest Moroccan artist to get residency in The International City of Arts in Paris, granted by the Moroccan and French ministries of culture.
Following his graduation, Ramhani embarked on a research with a group of works that depicted the isolation of the human body in an expressionistic manner, employing structure and colors together.
“Characters are not the center of my focus, but rather the painting per se,” Ramhani said. However, characters remain the essence of his paintings.
Ramhani also believes that the internet contributes to the techniques employed in his paintings. “I have a great interest in the images on the net and other media networks which shed light on the Arab World.”
According to him, there is no specific meaning to his paintings, they are mostly aimed to reproduce pictures of interest for the Arab street.
“My artworks are based on two levels: first, divide the picture to letters and words and second, focus on the painting itself,” Ramhani concluded.
