According to some news reports, Nicolas Sarkozy, the former French President, is reported to have been approached by Moroccan officials and received the offer to become the special Adviser to King Mohammed VI.
According to the daily newspaper Akhbar Al Youm, Rabat is interested in taking advantage of the networks of relations of the former French president and the relationships he built with several world leaders during his presidency, as well as with the French business community.
While some Moroccans may not receive this potential appointment with warmth, others may see it as a smart move by Rabat, especially since Morocco has a bunch of critical issues on its foreign agenda, at the forefront of which the question of the Sahara. Since during his mandate as French President, Sarkozy provided his unwavering support to Morocco in this regard, he may play a pivotal role in the lobbying efforts exerted by the Moroccan authorities in order to garner further support to their stance on this territorial conflict.
This information should be taken with caution, as there is still no official statement issued by the Rabat confirming the appointment of Nicolas Sarkozy as Special Adviser to King Mohammed VI.
During his 5-year long mandate as French President, Sarkozy built a strong relationship with King Mohammed VI. He frequently spent his vacations in Marrakesh. It is rumored that the villa where he stays, is owned by King Mohammed VI, who is believed to put it at the disposal of his guest every time he comes to Morocco.
