In implementation of Instructions of HM King Mohammed VI, Morocco spares no effort to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people, notably those stranded stranded in refugee camps in neighboring countries, Foreign Minister Saad Dine El Otmani said.
In this regard, El Otmani, who was speaking to MAP, expressed Morocco’s commitment to maintain coordination with international and local organizations as well as countries neighboring Syria.
Morocco deplores Kofi Annan’s decision to resign as Envoy of the UN and the Arab League for Syria on which hope was pinned to put an end to bloodshed in Syria, El Otmani added.
This resignation is a consequence of the lack of cooperation by the Syrian regime which fell short of upholding its commitments, said El Otmani, ascribing Annan’s decision also to the deterioration of the situation in all Syrian territories.
The recent events in Aleppo were a turning point in the crisis leading to the aggravation of the humanitarian situation, the Moroccan official went on to say.
El Otmani stressed the need for the UN Secretary General to appoint a new Envoy for Syria succeeding to Kofi Annan in coordination with the Arab League’s Secretary General with a view to finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria.
On this occasion, El Otmani commended the members of the mission of the UN observers in Syria for their efforts to implement the UN plan despite difficult working conditions they met while performing their duties.
EL Otmani also advocated the continuation of the UN presence in Syria in order to guarantee, as much as possible, protection for the Syrian civilians.
In this respect, he reiterated Morocco’s readiness to cooperate with the UN and the Arab League and contribute to all initiatives aiming at putting an end to violence and creating an atmosphere conductive to the relaunch of the political process.
