Morocco is committed to a political settlement of the crisis in Syria through a “genuine democratic transition,” Moroccan minister delegate for foreign affairs, Youssef Amrani, said on Tuesday.
Amrani stressed the need to ratchet up pressure on the Damascus regime.
“We examine with our partners the possibility of a way out of the crisis in Syria through a political settlement guaranteeing a genuine democratic transition,” Amrani told Al-Jazeera TV channel.
“We want a government or a team enjoying credibility and legitimacy needed to ensure success of the transition process” in this country, he said, deeming that the current Syrian regime is unable to lead such a process.
Amrani said that the military option is fraught with multiple risks in an area as sensitive as the Middle East, considering that “adventurism does not go hand in hand with diplomacy.”
“We must maintain strong political pressure on Syria in company with all countries in the region and neighboring countries with the aim of achieving a political solution that would primarily serve the interests and the unity of the Syrian people,” he said.
On the deteriorating situation in Syria, Amrani expressed concern that this country would slide into civil war, saying that “this is what we want to avoid.”
