The National Directorate of Weather Service announced that the Kingdom will experience a wave of heat this week until Saturday 11 August as a result of the “Shergui,” the very hot wind coming from the east.
Speaking to National Radio, Mouhammed Belaoshi, the Directorate of the Moroccan National Weather service, announced that the high temperatures will strike mostly the interior and northern regions of the East and South East of Morocco in addition to the plains of Tadla, Souss, and El Haouz.
Mr. Beloushi added that the temperature will gradually decrease to the usual and normal heat that characterizes this period of the summer.
The climate phenomenon, which is known in Morocco as “Shergui”, a heat wave from the scorching eastern desert, is expected to come with very high temperatures that will sweep all over the aforementioned regions and cities.
According to marocmeteo.ma, the expected temperature will increase in mostly all Moroccan cities with a heat peak in Marrakesh and Oujda reaching around 46 degree Celsius.
Now that Moroccans are fasting, being directly exposed to the sun may have negative side effects, namely dehydration and other serious health complications.
The heat wave has also negative implications on the normal growing of vegetables and fruits.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Morocco’s citrus production may slide 20 percent to 30 percent for the 2011-2012 season after a heat wave in May caused greater-than-usual losses of developing fruit.
