GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories, Aug 13, 2012 (AFP) –
Egypt is to allow some Palestinians to enter its territory from Gaza for the first time since a deadly attack last week on Egyptian guards in Sinai, a Palestinian border official said Monday.
“The Egyptian side informed us officially that it will open the crossing in both directions as of Tuesday morning for three days, for humanitarian cases only,” Ayoub Abu Shaar, head of Palestinian police at the Rafah border crossing, said in a statement.
Egypt closed its Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip after the August 5 attack that killed 16 Egyptian border guards but reopened it for Gaza-bound travellers only on Friday.
Sources in Cairo suggested after the attack that some of the gunmen had entered Sinai through a network of smuggling tunnels which run under the Gaza border.
