The anti-personnel mines that were used by the Polisario during its war against the Moroccan armed forces from 1976 to 1991 are still claiming lives. According to the Casablanca-based Radio Plus, two Moroccan masons died on Thursday in the region of Al Hagouna, in the city of Tarfaya, south of Morocco, after they walked into a mine zone. Tarfaya is located 100 km (60 miles) north of the Moroccan city of Laayoune in the Sahara.
Immediately after the incident, Moroccan authorities dispatched elements of the Armed Forces to the site to conduct an investigation.
According to a Dangerous Area Survey completed in 2008 by the United Nations Mine Action Center (UNMAS) and its partner, Landmine Action, Sahara is one of the most heavily mined territories in the world.
