Protesters break through into the compound of the US embassy in Tunis on Friday, undeterred by volleys of tear gas and warning shots fired by security forces, an AFP photographer reported.
The demonstrators, acting aggressively, managed to clamber over one of the walls round the mission, near the car park where several vehicles had been set ablaze, the photographer said.
Petrol bombs, thought to have started the blaze, were thrown at a separate part of the sprawling embassy compound, causing another fire there, an AFP journalist said, as security forces continued to fire tear gas and warning shots.
Several journalists told AFP they had been attacked by protesters.
More than 1,000 stone-throwing protesters had gathered outside the US embassy earlier, shouting anti-US slogans including: “Obama! Obama! We are all Osama!” in reference to the slain Al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden.
They also hurled insults at police, accusing them of “protecting” those who denigrate Islam.
