The United Nations special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Juan Mendez, said Tuesday in the UN that a “culture of human rights is emerging” in Morocco, hailing the “full cooperation” of the Moroccan authorities during his visit to the country last September.
“I can state that a culture of human rights is emerging” in Morocco, he told the member States meeting at the 3rd committee of the UN General Assembly, which discusses social, humanitarian and cultural issues.
The independent expert, who visited Morocco on September 15-22 at the invitation of the government of Morocco, voiced appreciation to the Moroccan authorities for their “full cooperation,” especially with regard to “unrestricted access to all places of detention and unimpeded access to interview detainees in private.”
