Rabat, October 29, 2012
King Mohammed VI received, on Monday at the Rabat royal palace, UNSG personal envoy for the Sahara Christopher Ross, a statement by the royal cabinet said.
The royal audience comes following the phone conversation of the sovereign, on August 25, 2012, with UNSG Ban Ki-moon.
The UN chief had assured that the United Nations mediation seeks to promote a mutually-acceptable political solution to this dispute, adding that his personal envoy will abide by the parameters set by the UNSC to fulfill his mandate related to ensuring the progress of the process of settlement and contributing to establishing the expected bilateral ties with Algeria.
During the audience, King Mohammed VI underlined that Morocco, which is continuously showing its adherence to the universal values of peace advocated by the UN, remains committed to the search for a solution to this artificial conflict, on healthy and sustainable bases, within the framework of the Moroccan broad autonomy proposal, hailed by the international community as serious and credible.
The King also reiterated Morocco’s unwavering attachment to establishing brotherly and exemplary ties with Algeria, a requisite for building a united Maghreb, in a constantly-evolving environment marked by a growing security threat in the Sahel-Saharan region.
Ross, who is on a tour of North Africa and Europe until November 15 and will report to the UN Security Council on his return, also met Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani and Interior Minister Mohand Laenser.
In early May Morocco withdrew its confidence in Ross as UNSG personal envoy to the Sahara and called on Ban Ki-moon to appoint a new personal envoy in order to breathe a new life into the process of negotiations towards finding a long-lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the territorial dispute.
The decision was taken a few days after the publication of the UN Secretary General Annual report on the Sahara and the adoption by the Security on April 24 of a new resolution, which extended the mandate of MINURSO until 30 April 2013.
