Since the start of the Israeli disproportionate and indiscriminate attacks on Gaza, 71 people were killed, among them more than 50 per cent were civilians, Al Jazeera English TV reported on Sunday.
In Sunday alone 27 people were savagely killed in the besieged tiny Palestinian territory. The bloodiest of all the attacks happened on Sunday morning when an Israeli airstrike killed 11 people from the same family, among which four children and four women. The families living in the area were traumatized by the attack, said Al Jazeera reporter.
A Palestinian woman who was speaking to Al Jazeera through Skype, said that Israel is continuing its air strikes against the civilian population. She said that people can’t go anywhere and the streets are empty. “It is very difficult for us to go out of our houses,” she pointed out.
Israeli’s warships killed 2 children and left six journalists wounded after an attack it carried out on Saturday night.
Israel’s armed forces are also targeting the journalists who are covering its offensive in Gaza. “Journalists here believe that it is a deliberate attack by the Israeli navy” against the journalists, Mohammed Omar, Al Jazeera’s correspondent said on Saturday after an Israeli attack on a media building, which caused a journalist working for Al Quds TV to lose his leg.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benyamin Nethanyahu, said in a meeting with the French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabuis, who were visiting the Jewish state, that Hamas has first to stop firing rockets into Israel, before we talk about anything else.
Al Jazeera reporter said that attacks are still continuing and no sign of an impending ceasefire in sight.
In a press conference in Thailand, the US President, Barack Obama, renewed his unwavering support to Israel saying that “Israel is just defending itself”, while adding that the rockets from Gaza need to stop before “we can engage in any negotiations.”
“Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory,” he said. “If that can be accomplished without a ramping up of military activity in Gaza, that is preferable.”
“That is not just preferable for the people of Gaza, it is also preferable for Israelis because if Israeli troops are in Gaza, they are much more at risk of incurring fatalities or being wounded,” he said. He further added that “the escalation in Gaza will put the two state solution away.”
