At least 77 people were killed since the start of the Israeli attacks on Gaza, and more than 640 people were injured, Al Jazeera Englisg TV reported on Sunday. Medical teams in Gaza are struggling to cope with the numbers of injured, the same source added.
On Sunday alone at least 30 people were slain as the Israeli forces escalated their airstrikes against the Palestinians living under siege since 2006.
The attack that caused commotion in the public opinion, especially in Arab and Muslim countries is the killing of 12 people from the same family on Sunday morning. Among the fatalities were four children and five women, including one 80-year-old. It is the deadliest attack of the Israeli forces so far.
Israel claimed it intended to target a top rocket mastermind of Hamas. Ashraf al-Kidra, spokesperson of the health ministry in Gaza, said that this claim could not be verified and the two men killed in the attack were also civilians.
“The operation in the Gaza Strip is continuing, and we are preparing to expand it,” Israels Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said at the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, just a few hours before the deadly attack that decimated a whole family.
The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, said he called on the Arab League to convene an emergency meeting at the level of head of States to chart a new strategy to deal with the situation on the ground.
Thousands gathered in the Yemeni Capital, as well as in Karachi, Pakistan, on Sunday to denounce the “aggression perpetrated” by the Israeli against the Palestinian civilians.
