People may get fat because of an hormonal imbalance, an unhealthy diet, or due to genetic influences, but most people get fat by eating excessively high carbohydrate foods.
Fat people do not have a standard image to live up to, like their skinny peers who have to follow certain diet to stay skinny and in consistency with the conventional standards of socially accepted shapes.
According to a new study carried by scientists from McMaster University in Canada, fat people are happier than their skinny friends.
The study found that FTO is the major genetic contributor to obesity.
FTO (Fat mass and obesity-associated protein) also known as “happy gene” is an enzyme that appears to be correlated with obesity in humans.
This FTO gene is confirmed to have contributed to the protection against major depression.
The scientists, who were conducting a research trying to find a link between obesity and depression, discovered that the opposite was indeed the case, as fat people were generally happier.
The study finding was confirmed by analyzing the genetic status of 17,200 DNA samples from participants in 21 countries.
“We set out to follow a different path, starting from the hypothesis that both depression and obesity deal with brain activity,” Professor David Meyre, of McMaster University in Canada, said.
“We hypothesized that obesity genes may be linked to depression. The difference of eight per cent is modest and it won’t make a big difference in the day-to-day care of patients. But, we have discovered a novel molecular basis for depression,” Meyre added.
He went to say that “It is the first evidence that an FTO obesity gene is associated with protection against major depression, independent of its effect on body mass index.”
