The announcement of the result of the vote was received in long clapping hands and exchange of warm hugs of congratulations in the headquarters of the UN, but the news was received with more ecstatic cheers of joy and whistles of victory in the streets and squares of Palestine.
A video on YouTube shows crowds of Palestinians jubilantly celebrating their new status and raising slogans of pride, such as “Oh the world listen! We are a nation that doesn’t kneel down”, “people want their free statehood!”
Other memorable scenes aired from Ramallah by Al Arabayia TV showed Palestinians waving their flags highly in the air and playing loud national music in their cars while fireworks lit up the sky to celebrate the historic vote.
“I’m happy they declared the state even though it’s only a moral victory. There are a lot of sharks out there, but it feels good,” 39-year-old Rashid al-Kor told AFP.
“I feel so good, I cannot describe my feelings, it’s as if we reached the end of a dark tunnel. With a Palestinian state we are now united as a people and a leadership,” Laila Jaman, a Palestinian-American, was quoted by Al Arabiya as saying.
According to Al Arabiya hundreds of Palestinians, mostly militants of the Fatah movement, took to the streets in the Gaza Strip to celebrate the vote of the General Assembly of the United Nations in favor of granting Palestine a non-member observer state status at the United Nations.
Immediately after the announcement of the results of the vote, Muslims across the globe sent f tweeps and messages on Twitter and Facebook congratulating the Palestinian people on this historic achievement.
After the much anticipated vote, Muslims and Arabs alike wonder whether this political victory will help advance the cause of the Palestinians and put them on the right path towards building their independent state. In light of US support to Israel and the latter disregard of the relevant UN resolutions, many believe that the dream of materializing the wishes of the Palestinians and Muslims into reality will not happen any time soon.
