New York (UN) -Nov 30, 2012
Morocco’s ambassador to the UN Mohamed Loulichki hailed, on Thursday evening at the UN’s headquarters in New York, the historic vote which gave back Palestinians their legitimate right to a national State.
“This a lucky day in the Palestinians’ journey to recover their legitimate right to establishing their national, independent and viable State with Al-Quds as capital,” he told media outlets following the vote that granted Palestine the status of a non-member state observer within the UN system.
This status was granted with a majority of 138 votes against nine, including the US, Canada and Israel (41 countries abstained from the vote).
He went on saying that this historic vote is a crucial stage and does not mean the end of the road, hoping that the Palestinians achieve very soon their legitimate aspiration of becoming a UN member state with all related rights and prerogatives.
The Palestinian cause, though at the heart of the Middle East crisis, “should not divert our attention from what is going on in other Arab territories which are still under the Israeli occupation,” he said, adding that such victory should incite parties to resume talks and move ahead towards a just, durable and comprehensive peace urged by the international community.
The Kingdom of Morocco is always striving in favor of dialogue and negotiations and had continuously called for Israel’s withdrawal from the Palestinian, Lebanese and Syrian territories as a prerequisite for any final settlement.
