An honest bus driver hit the headlines in Austria on Thursday after handing over to police 390,000 euros ($510,000) in cash that an old lady had forgotten on his vehicle.
“We are proud to have such upstanding employees. This shows the spirit of our firm,” Eduard Winter, head of Vienna’s public transport company Wiener Linien, told the Kronen-Zeitung daily.
In an incident last month and confirmed by police on Wednesday, Wolfgang R. stumbled across the bag stuffed with 500-euro notes during a routine check of his bus at the end of his shift.
“At first I thought it was somebody’s shopping, or medication,” the 51-year-old said.
With the help of a document that was also in the bag, police were able to identify the forgetful owner as a pensioner who had withdrawn her entire life savings from the bank.
