The European Commission adopted on Monday a 2.8 million euro-program meant to promote human rights in Morocco.
The program seeks to back actions by the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) and the Human Rights Ministerial delegation (DIDH), two key institutions for the protection of human rights in Morocco, the Commission said.
On this occasion, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule said that, through this new program, the EU shows the importance it gives to human rights and the unreserved support it intends to give to the CNDH and the DIDH to fulfill their respective missions.
The European official added that the future achievements to be made by Morocco in this area will bring the Kingdom closer to the EU’s basic values regarding human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
The two Moroccan rights bodies will play a vital role in protecting human rights in the years to come. The exchange of experiences and good practices with European bodies having similar mandate and competences are among activities scheduled to receive support.
The Morocco-EU cooperation to uphold democracy and human rights took concrete substance through backing the national action plan for democracy and human rights and monitoring the national reconciliation process following recommendations by the Equity and reconciliation committee (IER), the Commission recalled.
