The adoption by the Security Council of the presidential statement on the Sahel-Saharan region reflects the positive contribution of the Presidency of Morocco to this UN body, said, Friday in Rabat, Foreign Minister, Saad El Dine Otmani.
This statement, which includes the political, security and humanitarian dimensions of the crisis in the Sahel-Saharan region, will serve as a reference for the various international bodies regarding this issue, said El Otmani at a conference organized on the occasion of the Moroccan presidency of the Security Council.
He also recalled that in December, during which the Kingdom holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, was marked by the adoption of a resolution authorizing the deployment of an international force in Mali.
This important resolution, co-sponsored by Morocco, will contribute to the efforts to resolve the crisis in Mali, a move highly anticipated by the international community, including the countries of the Economic Community of African States (ECOWAS), said the Minister.
For El Otmani, Morocco’s contribution is not limited to the period of its presidency of the Security Council. “The Kingdom has shown great dynamism, as a member of that body, especially when tackling issues of interest to the international community, such as the situation in Africa, Syria and the conflict in the Middle East, “he said.
For his part, former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Ahmed Snoussi, reaffirmed the principles that drive the foreign policy of Morocco and its action within the UN, recalling in this context that the Sahara issue remains a priority of Morocco’s foreign policy.
Initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Rabat and members of the Foreign Affairs Committees of both Houses of Parliament, as well as scholars and members of the Moroccan diplomatic club.
