Moroccan security services, in coordination with the General Directorate of National Territory Surveillance, have broken up a six-member cell that recruited young Moroccans embracing jihadist thought to send them to the camps of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Algeria, an interior-ministry statement said.
The statement added that investigations showed that the cell has enlisted volunteers in coordination with one of its extremist elements operating in Algeria, to facilitate their infiltration into Algeria through Morocco-Algerian border to join the terrorist organization’s camps.
The ministry said that among the members of the cell is a former inmate under the anti-terrorism law, who was extradited from Algeria in 2005 after his attempt to reach the camps of the former Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), later renamed Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb after its affiliation with the Al Qaeda network.
The suspects will be brought to justice after completion of the investigation, the statement said.
