Morocco has always been committed to the Arab world and Africa, and has always worked hard to support just causes in the world at the United Nations’ Security Council, said Thursday in Rabat, Morocco’s former permanent representative to the UN, Ahmed Snoussi.
A seasoned diplomat and connoisseur of the intricacies of the UNSC, Snoussi recalled, at a meeting on “The experience of Morocco at the Security Council: What is at stake?” the time he served as chairman of the Council, between 1992 and 1993, a period which was, according to him, eventful and instructive.
Despite a difficult international context marked by the exacerbation of rivalries between the United States and Russia (former USSR), “Morocco managed to carry out his mandate which culminated in a series of resolutions and interventions that contributed to the promotion of peace in the world,” said the former Moroccan diplomat.
As for the Palestinian cause, Morocco has managed to push through resolution 799 in December 1992, condemning the deportation of 400 Palestinians by Israel, said Snoussi at this meeting, initiated by the department of “International Law and International Relations” of the Faculty of Law and economics, Rabat-Agdal.
Morocco also worked at the SC to alleviate the suffering of the people of countries going through hard times such Iraq, Libya, and Somalia, he added.
According to Snoussi, Morocco deserves credit for drawing the attention of the international community to the “untenable situation” in Africa, where drought and hunger were rampant, and for calling for “urgent action” to restore stability on the continent.
The issue of territorial integrity was at the heart of this dynamic, Snoussi, said, noting that the Kingdom had complied, with a lot of good faith, with the UN calls to hold a referendum on the Sahara, despite the “war funded by certain parties who did not respect the principles of good neighbourhood which made the basis of the Marrakech Declaration, establishing the Arab Maghreb Union. “
