Casablanca – As the current year comes to an end, the nation of Morocco has experienced two major events that marked moments of happiness and sadness. The saddest moment in the kingdom was that during which dozens of Moroccans lost their lives due to a tragic accident. The happiest moment marked the qualification of the Moroccan football team for African Cup of nations.
Morocco World News joined Moroccans in sad moments and reported on the worst-ever bus crush in the history of the country. On Tuesday, September 4th, 2012, forty two passengers died and 24 were seriously injured in a bus accident near the risky road of Tichka between Marrakech and Ouarzzazet. Twenty one of the injured passengers were hospitalized in Ibn Toufail hospital in Marrakech.
The accident occurred at 2.00 am after the bus which departed from the city of Zagoura fell in a slippery cliff. Sleeping of the driver along with bus overload are believed to be the main factors that led to the tragic accident.
King Mohamed VI expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and paid for funerals and burial costs, while the population around the kingdom showed deep sorrow following the tragic event.
On Saturday, October 13th, 2012, Moroccan football team beat Mozambique 4 – 0 and qualified for the 2013 African cup of nations. As soon as the crucial match was over, large crowds burst into the streets immediately, expressing their delight for the long awaited victory.
This qualification comes after the failure of Morocco to qualify to African Cup of Nations in Angola 2010 and World Cup 2010 in South Africa. During the celebrations, National flags were carried and slogans that glorified the achievement were chanted. People were dancing and singing while drivers were tooting cars horns in several streets of Morocco’s major cities.
As for the coming year, Morocco World News wishes its audience in Morocco and the globe happy moments filled with love and peace.
