A video published on YouTube Tuesday, April 23 shows a little girl with deep scars and wounds on her face, hands and other parts of her body. Wiam was allegedly attacked by a man who attempted to rape her while she was playing nearby her house in a village near Sidi Kacem (about 110 Km East Rabat). Because of her resistance, the man used his sickle to carve deep scars and wounds on her juvenile face.
Wiam was transported from the regional hospital of Sidi Kacem to the hospital of Kenitra, but it seems the latter provides her with nothing more than a bed. She lies on her bed in a total neglect for 24 hours so far without even having her bandage changed. What adds insult to injury is that her family comes from very underprivileged social backgrounds and don’t know what to do defend the rights of their daughter. The perpetrator of this crime is free because of the influence his rich family exerts on the authorities according to Wiam’s mother. “Because his family is rich, they released him,” she says.
Wiam is in a dire need of a plastic surgery and her family cannot afford such an operation. She calls on people to help her and beseechingly says “Please help me. I want to go back to my siblings with no scars. Here in Kenitra, they did nothing for me. Please help me regain my face which is ruined by a man. I want my face to be like it was. I want to be beautiful like I was.”
In the case of Wiam, one gets puzzled who to blame! Shall we blame society which became like a jungle where survival is for the fittest, the strongest, and the richest? Shall we blame the justice system that allows the perpetrators of such crimes to escape prosecution and impartial trial irrespective of their social backgrounds? Shall we blame our health system for its neglect of such urgent cases? Shall we blame our feminist and ‘Femen’ organizations for their much ado about trivialities while forgetting cases like Wiam’s? Or shall we blame Wiam herself for being a girl and poor in a ruthless society?
