The companies of Tele-Communication are seizing the regional and national exams to gain more clients and to gain more money. For them, the language of ethics and values has no meaning in front of the language of Dirhams and Euros.
As I was taking my breakfast in a cafe near the office of a national agency for telecommunication, I noticed the huge number of people and the crowds of parents and children to benefit from the last offer called “Liberty” which enables the client to benefit from six hours of communication a month for only MAD120.
Parents are not only buying cell phones and units for their children who will pass the national and regional exams, they are also asking for teachers or university students or unemployed graduated students who will cooperate with them to answer for their children on the day of exams.
Instead of banning and discouraging their children from cheating, here are parents who should be the first to educate their children, instead working and doing all their best to encourage corruption and cheating; a behavior that some parents are used to do at this time of the year when the exams get near.
Accordingly, there are teams of teachers, known all over the cities by parents and students, who are specialists in answering exam questions and selling their values and principles in order to get some money to pass their summer holidays.
They gather on the days of exams in a house and they answer the questions they get by cell phone. They either call for them or get them by text. Some others get answers for their writings from friends all over the country and all over the world through friends they have online and who help them write essays on exam day.
The question that is asked now, and that we should ask is: why do companies of tele-communication offer new promotions at this crucial moment only a few days and hours before our national exams? We do not need to be intelligent to answer this. They encourage cheating and use it for their own good.
Frankly, cheating can not be stopped in classrooms as long as cheating is what rules inside homes and political institutions. When the rulers cheat their people, the people will always work hard to discover new ways to cheat each other.
Well, while the whole society encourages cheating, teachers now will be enclosed in classrooms with wild students who are armed with cell phones, papers and Ipods so as to cheat and who believe that they should cheat by hook or by crook. Thus, the question of teacher security, safety and vulnerability will be tested on the day of the exams.
Surely, we should be ready to hear news of attacks from the parts of both parents and stduents on teachers who have to change the hats of teachers to being policemen and policewomen; something, we do not hope to hear. But this is the price teachers pay when swimming in dirty rivers.
