Moroccan police have arrested a suspected British paedophile in the town of Tetouan after residents overheard the screams from his car of a 6-year-old girl he allegedly abducted, local media reported on Thursday.
The 59-year-old man was arrested at a petrol station on Wednesday when a crowd of people surrounded his Spanish-registered car and notified police, a source in the northern Moroccan town told AFP.
The girl he allegedly abducted, who was from a poor family in Tetouan,managed to escape, the source said.
The man was a resident in the town of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in northern Morocco, and was the subject of police arrest warrant issued in Madrid for paedophilia and kidnapping, the Arabic daily Al-Massae reported, citing police sources.
He is being held in custody in Tetouan while the police investigate allegations that he raped another young the girl in the nearby town of Chefchaouen several days earlier.
The British embassy in Rabat confirmed that a British man had been arrested in Morocco but declined to give further details.
The incident comes just weeks after thousands of Moroccans marched in Casablanca to condemn paedophilia and violence against children in the North African country.Last month, a 60-year-old Frenchman was jailed for 12 years by a court in Casablanca for paedophilia.
