Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who was hospitalized sixteen days ago for a lung infection, is now in a critical condition, announced the South African presidency Sunday night.
“The health state of the former President Nelson Mandela, who is still in hospital in Pretoria, has become critical,” said the South African presidency, noting that President Jacob Zuma met Nelson Mandela’s wife at the hospital Sunday evening to discuss the situation.
“The doctors are doing everything possible to improve his condition and ensure that Mandela is treated well and that he is in good hands,” said Zuma, quoted by South African press.
Last Saturday, the presidency had stated that Nelson Mandela was “in a serious but stable condition,” after the U.S. television channel, CBS had reported that his condition was probably much more severe than what official statements contended.
