After a tweet disparaging Islam, Inna Shevchenko, the leader of FEMEN in France, stirred anger and resentment among Muslim and non-Muslim followers. The Ukrainian activist was accused of Islamophobia after a tweet describing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as a “stupid” thing and Islam as an ugly religion. “What can be more stupid than Ramadan!? What can be uglier than this religion?” she wrote.
The tweet which was released in support of the Tunisian Femen activist, Amina, was deleted by mistake, but Inna Shevchenko affirms that she fully assumes it. She added that “the tweet was deleted by mistake or by Mohammed, it’s the same thing.”
Inna Shevchenko, who recently obtained the status of a refugee in France, said that the tweet “was sent when we learned that Amina was obliged to fast during Ramadan in prison while she is not a believer.”
The Tunisian Femen activist Amina Sboui awaits in provisional custody for her trial for charges of provocative graffiti writings on the wall of a cemetery in Kairouan (150 km south of Tunis) to protest against a gathering of the Salafi movement.
“We are not Islamophobic, but we are not afraid to highlight the draconian aspects of this religion or other religions,” insisted Inna Shevchenko. “If you want to treat us Islamophobic, so treat us religiophobes, since we are an atheist movement. Feminism and religion cannot co-exist.”
The young woman, 23, endorses radical views toward religions in general and Islam in particular. She believes that Islam is “has become a political doctrine that tries to control the lives of all and control women.”
